The Danish Army
successfully employs Steel Beasts Professional as a gunnery and conduct-of-fire trainer.
Steel Beasts Professional has some very useful features for this
purpose.
During the action phase, Steel Beasts Professional captures important
state information at key gunnery events (the operation of the laser range
finder, the firing of the main gun, and the impact of the round).
During the after action review, the views through the gunner's primary and
secondary sight, as
well as the map and 3D terrain views can be recreated at these key gunnery
events. This, combined with other important data displayed in the AAR, such as target
and turret angular speeds, true and measured distances, can be used by the
instructor to help analyze the gunner's procedures and actions.
In addition, the instructor can specify shot deviations on a per-target
basis to test
and train gunnery observation, and the employment of correction procedures.
Degraded gunnery can also be trained by disabling key system functions,
such as the LRF, the TIS, or stabilization, for example.
Steel Beasts' ballistic model is accurate to within the error spread found
in round-to-round variation of the real ammunition over normal training
distances (up to 5,000m).
The Danish Army has developed hardware interfaces that allow the connection
of original spare parts of the Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 gunner's handles as
well as the gunner's control panel with a standard PC USB port. Combined
with a communications network in classrooms that uses original spare parts
of the tanks, vehicle crew headset helmets can be used to transmit the
reports and fire commands between gunner and vehicle commander during the
training session.
