Steel Beasts Pro wins I/ITSEC Serious Games Challenge Award
Orlando, FL, December 8, 2006

In a surprising tie vote, software developer eSim Games, LLC shared first place for the People' Choice Award of the Serious Games Challenge during this year's I/ITSEC Exhibition and Conference. eSim Games presented the Steel Beasts Professional virtual simulation for crew, crew procedure, and tactical training of mechanized forces of up to battalion level. The I/ITSEC visitors cast their vote for a mature training solution that addresses many everyday challenges in  training and education of AFV crews and junior leaders.

"We're very excited about this reassurance by a broad public of subject matter experts", said Director of Marketing Nils Hinrichsen. "Those who cast their vote know very well what is needed in daily training. We've seen most of them thoroughly examining all the presented solutions and making careful and considerate decisions. "At the same time we are grateful to the I/ITSEC organizers for staging a competition and showcase to promote the concept of serious games for daily training. This should help to further pave the way for the entire serious games marketplace to establish itself as a serious supplier of training aids."

Many visitors to eSim Games' booth shared the assessment that a medium fidelity trainer like SB Pro is a serious and needed supplement to established high fidelity trainers. By addressing the basics of maneuver and understanding the complex challenges of mechanized operations, Steel Beasts helps to raise the initial skill level and helps to better retain the high fidelity simulators' advanced lessons' know-how. It therefore helps armies utilize simulation technology more efficiently so they can make the most out of multi-million dollar investments.

Improvements/fixes since 2.251:
  • Commander interior is now available in M3A2.
  • SB will compensate for some obsolete texture file names in
the themes. (SB will search for .jpg files if there is a non-existent .bmp file name listed.)
  • Added text display when vehicles are being resupplied or repaired.
  • Repair times are now not displayed if a required truck or
    ambulance is required for repair.
  • Fixed bug in which hull angular speed was affecting
    the lead calculations.
  • Fixed bug in which loadout of first-used ammo is reduced by one.
  • AAR reports are now saved on client machines, in addition to
    the host machine.
  • Fixed bug in which BMP-1 missiles start off flying too high
and so don't recover in time to hit the target.
  • Fixed bug with joystick control of TC eye view on the FISTV.
  • Fixed bug in which the loader's interior when viewed from the
Peri in the Leo2A5 was transparent.
  • Fixed bug in HE grenade / smoke ammo loadouts for Leo 2A5.
  • Made change to allow SB to be run on Windows98.
  • Glass of Mercedes no longer will look bright in thermal view.
  • Hot keys for GAS range adjustment was not working. This is now fixed.
  • Added 2-lane country paved road to map editor.
  • Fixed bug that caused massive explosion of 25mm HE round when hitting a soldier.
  • Fixed bug in which 25mm HE round was not exploding when
    hitting the ground.
  • Adjusted frame-rate smoothing algorithm for better performance.
  • Added hot key for Leo2A5 gunner's mag toggle (since it was
interfering with the 1st-return hot key for the 2a5).
  • Fixed bug in which alternate vehicles in column formation did
    not scan to the left.
  • Modified AI driver behavior for column formation when halted.
Now drivers will move towards the column line rather than waiting for the lead vehicle to move out.
  • Fixed bug in which old missions with troops had squad sizes of
    16, rather than 6.
  • Fixed bugs with map graphics not being properly sent over the
    network to other machines.
  • Added buttons in score windows to move sub-scores up and down to re-arrange their order.
  • Fixed bug with ground texture caching that caused missions
that use the same piece of terrain, but different terrain themes, to have distant ground terrain look messed up.
  • Fixed problem with T72 armor settings that left it vulnerable
    from the front.
  • Position of vehicles in AAR are more accurately recorded now,
so that corresponding hit rays match up more correctly.
  • Non-lethal hits that happen to hit a vehicle when it is killed
will no longer be recorded in the AAR as an event to avoid confusion over what killed a vehicle.
  • Fixed bug that was causing CC gunners to aim too low.
  • Fixed bug in evaluating conditions with "total strength" sub condition.
  • Reduced time for coax repair to 50 seconds.
  • Map damage will now be passed down to attached troops.
  • Extended option in mission editor to restrict map updates and
map view to all Pro versions of SB.
  • Modified vehicle behavior on bridges.
  • Added option in Option Screen to select between jpg and bmp
    image formats for screen shots.
  • Fixed bug that allowed artillery to be called when no
artillery support was given in the mission editor.
  • Adjusted distance intervals for artillery observation,
    correction, and range bracketing.
  • Changed main loop so that SB will continue to run when
minimized during a network session. SB will pause when minimized if not connected to a network session. (SB minimizes when it loses focus in full-screen mode.) Added ability for SB to be minimized in windowed mode (by clicking on SB icon in Windows toolbar).
  • Corrected some misnamed Finnish voice files.
  • Credits music will play just once now (no looping).
  • Fixed bug in which infantry could fire when in water.
  • Vehicles will now try to avoid detached turrets from destroyed tanks.
  • Adjusted LOS settings through forests to make computer
controlled units less likely to see an enemy through a forest.
  • Changed rendering of ground-clutter objects to reduce
rendering anomalies of large ground-clutter objects. (Ground clutter is NOT supposed to be large, but there are too
many maps being created with large ground clutter to use ignore this.) Frame rates will be reduced in some cases now because of this change. (If frame rates are too low, try setting the detail level to Medium or Low in the Options Screen.)
  • Infantry will fire ATGMs higher at targets that are behind ridges.
  • Increased maximum climb angle for TOW missile.
  • Revised armor values for Bradley and Mercedes.
  • Modified adjust-fire model for artillery so that the direction
line displayed in the window is the direction to target, not the
    direction to the arty field.
  • Adjusted timer code to better handle multi-processor machines.
  • Fixed bug that prevented the HIND from firing at enemies at times.
  • Computer controlled commanders will button up in forests more
readily when moving to prevent getting hurt by branches.
  • Main gun is now visible from the unity sight on M1A1.
  • GAS sight now properly slaved to main gun on M1A1.
  • Fixed problem with "replace theme" command in the mission editor in which ground clutter was not being updated in 3D preview.

Steel Beasts Pro PE Has Gone Gold
Mountain View, CA, February 9, 2006

Software developer eSim Games, LLC announced today that the Personal Edition of their armor simulation "Steel Beasts Professional" has gone gold. Shipping will begin as soon as duplication and printing are complete.

"We're happy about the release and proud of the Personal Edition", said president and lead programmer Al Delaney. "SB Pro PE fills a gap in individual training and distance learning projects of some of our customers, whom we can now support even better with our solutions. In addition, the Personal Edition is available to anybody interested in contemporary armored and mechanized combat tactics, and can be ordered directly from our web site."

The Personal Edition is the sum of a number of software customizations on the original Steel Beasts simulation game which were ordered by several armies over the past three years. Noticeable improvements over the original simulation game include support for 3D accelerator hardware (for higher screen resolutions and a better representation of the virtual environment), improved artwork, and the addition of a number of armored vehicles that were never before modeled in detail by any other commercially available software - including two variants of the Leopard 1, the Leopard 2A5, the M2/M3A2 Bradley, the FIST vehicle for artillery support, and various M113 and Humvee versions.

"With these additions Steel Beasts Professional can now rightfully characterized as a combined arms simulation", Technical Director Nils Hinrichsen pointed out. "Previously we had a focus on main battle tanks, but we are broadening the perspective step by step without giving up our attention to detail. And there's even more down the road. Our concept of Steel Beasts Pro is that whenever we add a special feature for a certain customer, we will make it available to all other customers as well. We call it 'informal joint development'. For example, the Swedish Army has commissioned a development contract for the CV9040 IFV, one of the world's leading armored fighting vehicles. Once that we have finished the work on it, we will offer an upgrade to everybody - including our customers of the Personal Edition - that will include this new virtual vehicle. This extends the product lifetime of the Professional series for as long as there is interest among our customers to see improvements."

Steel Beasts Professional -
Reviewing 2004, and eSim Games' outlook to 2005
Sunnyvale, CA January 6, 2005

2004 has been a successful year for software developer eSim
Games, LLC. Its virtual armored combat simulation "Steel Beasts Professional" has been delivered to a number of new army customers: the Finnish Combat School in Parolanummi; the Dutch Cavalry
School in Amersfoort; the Swedish Combat School of Kvarn and Skövde; and the Ejercito del Tierra from Spain. In addition, the Danish Army Combat School in Oksbøl, an old customer, received its
latest customization, featuring many novel elements - a virtual Leopard 2A5, the Leopard 1-based bridgelayer "Biber", and its Russian counterpart, the MT-55. HIND gunships further expand the tactical scope and versatility of the simulation.

"What's really great about this is that all of our customers will profit from most of the customization work," said eSim Games' president and programmer, Alexander H. Delaney. "It is not limited to the Danish Army, or Army customers in general. Soon we will be releasing the Personal Edition of Steel Beasts Professional, giving customers all over the world the unique opportunity to share the very same technology used by our army customers, eventually even exchanging scenario files with them." Marketing Director, Nils Hinrichsen, apologized for the delayed release of the Personal Edition of SB Pro, saying, "While the very concept of Steel Beasts Professional is one of
constant, evolutionary progress, we wanted make sure that the maturity of code meets our standards. To make up for it, we could include a few more features in the initial release."

Rooted in the classic "simulation game of the year 2000," Steel Beasts Professional is based on a brand new, custom-built graphics engine, compatible with DirectX 9 to take advantage of today’s
powerful consumer graphics cards. The new graphics engine can render fine details up close, with visibility distances of about 5 kilometers.

Steel Beasts Professional will require DirectX 9 installed. eSim Games recommends 1.5 GHz or faster processors, 256 MByte RAM, and graphics cards designed for DirectX 9.

Steel Beasts gave its debut as a tank simulation game of modern tanks in summer 2000. Development on Steel Beasts Professional started after the release of Steel Beasts Gold in April 2002. Over
the past three years, the new engine was prepared, and the focus shifted from a purely armor centric point of view to a simulation of company level combined arms combat tactics.

Steel Beasts is from independent developer eSim Games, LLC, with its headquarters located in Sunnyvale, California. For more information, Contact Nils Hinrichsen: Ssnake@eSimGames.com
