When I run the setup.exe
file to install SB, I receive this message: "Setup is unable to decompress and copy all of the program files needed to proceed with the installation."
Is there a fix? The error could be
due to insufficient free space in the Windows/Temp folder. Try
deleting files from this folder and installing SB again.
I
have the German version of SB, and it seems to freeze up on the splash
screen. We're looking into this problem, but as a
work-around you can Alt-Tab to desktop, then back, and things should
then work fine.
SB
won't run, or is running slowly, under Windows XP. Is there anything I
can do?
Try setting the compatibility of SB to Win98/Me. (Right click on
tanksim.exe, select Properties >
Compatibility, cliick the box "Run this program in compatibility
mode for:" and select Win98/Me.
How
do I get my joystick to work in Steel Beasts?
For Windows 95/98/ME: The joystick must be assigned to ID #1 in the Windows Game Controllers
app., which you can find
in the Windows Control Panel. For Windows XP: you must open the Gaming
Options app., which you can find in the Windows Control Panel. In the
Game Controller tab, click on Advanced and set your joystick as the
preferred device to use with older programs.

I
am getting an error stating: The TANKSIM.EXE file is linked to missing
export DDRAW.DLL:DirectDrawCreateEx. What's going on?
You probably don't have a recent version of DirectX installed on your
system. You can download the latest version of DirectX from Microsoft's
site for free here.
DirectX 7.0 or greater must be installed on your system for Steel Beasts
to run properly.

I'm
having problems running SB, and it might be related to my sound
card. Is there anything I can do?
Yes! We've had reports that the hardware
acceleration for some sound cards (especially the TBS Santa Cruz) is causing problem problems with
SB. To see if this is the source of your problem, simply disable
hardware acceleration for you sound card, as described below:
Method 1:
Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel
In Control Panel, look for an icon (or line) for your sound card.
Once you find the object for your sound card, double click on it
to open it. Then within that application, look for something
that will allow you to change the settings for the sound card.
You might have to select a tab called "Settings." Once
you find the settings options, you will hopefully see a checkbox that
will say something like, "Disable DirectSound hardware acceleration."
Make sure this box is checked. Then try running SB again.
Method 2:
To use this method, you must see a DirectX icon in the
Control Panel for this to work:. (If you don't see the DirectX
icon in the Windows Control Panel you can install this DirectX applet.)
- From the Window's start button, click on Settings > Control Panel
- Double click on the DirectX icon in the control panel.
- Then click on the DirectSound tab.
- Then click on Multimedia Properties.
- Then click on Advanced Properties and select the Performance tab.
- Disable hardware acceleration for your sound card. (Move the slider for
Hardware Acceleration to NONE)
- Try running SB again.
Why won't my joystick won't work with in the game?
Check in the advanced settings of the game controller applet in Windows
to see whether or not your stick is attached to a slot other than #1.
Usually, moving the joystick to the #1 slot resolves related problems.

When I try to run the game,
I get an error message stating "ERROR - DirectX 7.0 or greater must
be installed." I have the newest version of DirectX 8.0 installed on my machine
What's going on?
This fix is from Eric Reynolds, Texas... It seems that DirectX 8.0 was
not overwriting several d3d*.* files in the Windows/System directory,
although it overwrote the majority of the files and it was reporting
that DirectX 8.0 was installed correctly. I had DirectX 7.0A
installed before DirectX 8.0 ... I think what happened was DirectX 7.0A
never overwrote these files to begin with and for whatever reason,
DirectX 8.0 didn't either. The only way I found to correct the
problem was to boot into DOS, manually delete the files in question, and
reboot the machine. Well, as soon as I did that, Windows USER.EXE
file wouldn't load correctly, so I had to reinstall Windows 98SE.
As soon as THAT was accomplished, I re-loaded DirectX 8.0 once more and
this time, because the entire version of DirectX files on my machine
were now the DirectX 6.1A that Windows reloads whenever you reinstall
Windows, DirectX 8.0 was able to copy itself correctly and that fixed
that problem with the
game.

I have just installed an ATI Rage FURY MAXX 64mb Dual Processor video
card, and I can't see any text in the game except for the beginning and
ending credits. The missions were all garbled and the in-game
menu's were unreadable as well.
Right click on the Desktop to bring up the Display Properties window.
Go to the Windows Display Properties/Performance submenu, and turn down
the card's Hardware Acceleration and try again. You may have to
turn it down to 1/4 of what it was capable of.

I can't install Steel Beasts under my Japanese version of Windows.
How can I fix this?
Work-around (provided by Rika Singyouji dca-mw@sm.rim.or.jp).
Also, check out Takeshi
Kanno's Japanese FAQ.
Step 1. Run regedit.exe. (Click on Start > Run... and open
c:\windows\regedit.exe)
Step 2. Open registry group below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>System>CurrentControlSet>Control>
NLs>Codepage
Now, you should see the tree of registry keys on the left and a column
of
numbers (such as 1251,1253) the right.
the ACP and OEMCP keys are located the bottom of a column.
Change both of these keys from "932" to "850".
To edit the keys, left click the key name (ACP or OEMCP), then right
click on the key name and select "HENKOU"(this means
"MODIFY" in Japanese).
Step 3. Close this window. You do NOT need to save changes
that you made at "step 2" .
Step 4.Restart WINDOWS 9X.
Step 5.When the Desktop screen appears, you might see something
strange. your Desktop might have been cleared completely.
And all Japanese characters are broken in this state.
If you received the error message dialog as soon as Desktop
is drawn, DO NOT CLICK "OK" (or "CONFIRM") button !!
IGNORE this error message dialog. Don't touch it, and click
"MY COMPUTER." From CDROM drive you can execute SB's
setup.exe. Of course, if you don't receive such a dialog, click
"MY COMPUTER" and execute SB's setup.exe right away.
The Installation procedure should be successful except that
InstallShield will NOT register SB in the WINDOWS Start menu.
Step 6.Edit registry again with regedit.exe (as in Step 1).
This time, you must change both "ACP" and "OEMCP"
from "850"
back to "932".
Step 7.Restart WINDOWS 9X.
Step 8.To start SB you must execute tankSim.exe directly.
tankSim.exe is located Program Files>Shrapnel Games>eSim
>Steel Beasts>release.
Enjoy!
To install SB, As you know, you must edit your PC's registry.
So, you should do this under a extreme caution.
I can't take responsibility for you. You must try this at your
own risk.
If you don't like to edit registry key manually, there is a nice
freeware named "U.S. Game Installer". you can download it
from www.vector.co.jp .
I hope this solution works for you.
