Player's Tips - SB1

 Honor's Tips

Before you begin fighting, study the terrain. Spend some time with the LOS tool, and if you see a position that looks like it offers good cover, use jump there in first person <F1> to get a good look. Make note of these positions so that you don't have to spend time looking for a safe place when you start getting hammered while the fight is on.

Move Move Move. This is kind of contradicting the first item, but it's important. When you are in sitting in one of your well-chosen positions, don't hang around, especially if you've engaged the enemy from that position. Once the exchange is over, find another place to fire from. Or at the least, move you vehicles back, leaving no more than 1 on the ridge to continue scanning for enemies.

The reason for this is to avoid artillery. That stuff is the most frustrating weapon the enemy has. Your vehicles are smart enough to move out of the barrage, but they don't always make it. And the Only time you should ever have 2 platoons within 200m of each other is when you are hitting a large enemy force and need to kill them as fast as possible (the faster you kill them, the sooner you can move to another position).

I have seen an M1 platoon stop a large counterattack almost single handedly, only to be hit by ICM a coupe minutes later and have all 4 tanks die in 5 seconds (I'm sure Oddball can give you the details).

Don't be afraid to split up your units. It helps keep losses down when you are ambushed or hit by arty. Just make sure that your units have nearby support. When most of your weapons (M1's main gun and M2's TOWs) can hit targets 3 km away, it doesn't matter a whole lot if the nearest friendly unit is 50m or 500m away. This isn't always feasible (especially in dense terrain), but more often than not, the increased survivability of your forces makes up for a slight loss in immediate firepower.

There's no need for you to baby your forces. Quite often (especially when time is a factor) you will have to take risks so that you can get to where you need to be. In one MP game my company and the company next to me were going to rush ahead to take an objective. I had the longer route, so when I stopped to deal with a few PCs and their troops, I got so far behind that the other company went in without me and lost 90%of its vehicles.

mjp66m's Tips

I found out that evading ATGM in an M1a1 is possible and can be done frequently. the method i use is to engage the threat, then if there is no cover to move behind (pop smoke if you have it or the range is very close) and reverse a few yards w/ your smoke generators on, while zigging and zagging irregularly making sure to never to to expose your tanks side to the enemy. Basically create a wall of smoke around you in a semi -circle while reversing. Smoke has its pros and cons: PROS- it will throw off the ATGM the majority of the time, and conceal you combined w/ movement and the smoke gens. CONS - It can interfere w/ your LRF and impair your view of the battlefield. Use it wisely and experiment with it. Once you pop smoke you can advance ahead of it or retreat behind it until it dissipates using it as your own little fixed battle position while it's there. Of course there's more to it than this, but that's up to you to experiment and get a feel for what works with you and what does not.
