Where can I learn more about the mission editor?

Is it possible to get a map made or be able to make one on my own?

Is it possible to print out a map?

Will there be an open structure to let me add my own textures and objects?

What's the difference between the tactics HOLD, GUARD, DEFEND and NONE in Steel Beasts?

I'm making a scenario and I would rather have the tanks reach a checkpoint and sit there without moving to a better position. Is this possible?

What determines whether you have a victory or a defeat in the scoring formula?

Where can I learn more about the mission editor?
There's a great preview at www.simhq.com by John Sponauer which does a fine job of describing and illustrating how he put a mission of his own together. This should give you an idea how things work

Is it possible to get a map made or be able to make one on my own?
Yes! The maps in Steel Beast have two parts to them: the height map and terrain map. The map editor in Steel Beasts is used to create a new terrain map for a particular height map that you choose. Steel Beasts comes with many different height maps, but the map editor cannot modify them. Whatever type of scenario you have in mind, we probably have the right height map for you - from steep hills to flat areas and moderate hills. Browse the height maps in the map editor, and you will most likely find an area that suits your needs. (Some height maps may not have been installed when you installed SB, but they are on the installation CD. You can simply copy them to the height map folder using Windows Explorer)

If you want to create your own height map, it can be done, but we don't recommend it. Height maps are very large (typically 8 - 16 MB). If you use your own height map, you will have to send it to anybody else who wants to play a mission that uses that height map. There are two third-party solutions for the conversion of eight-bit grayscale images to the RAW format of Steel Beasts height maps - SBRAW and SBHMC. However, we do not provide any technical support for these utilities.

Is it possible to print out a map?
You can't print a map directly rom SB, but you can export a map into a .bmp file and then print it using any image editing program, like MS Paint. To create the .bmp image, just load the map that you want to print in the MAP editor, then select File > Export. This will give you a very big map, but you can always crop it in the image editing program to suit your needs.

Will there be an open structure to let me add my own textures and objects?
As far as 3D objects go, no decision has been made yet, but people have already produced their own paint schemes and maps/missions, which are available for download using the menu bar at the top-left of this page.

What's the difference between the tactics HOLD, GUARD, DEFEND and NONE in Steel Beasts?
Please refer to the chapter on "Battle Positions" in the manual (page 24).

I'm making a scenario and I would rather have the tanks reach a checkpoint and sit there without moving to a better position.  Is this possible?
You might try several things, depending on your intent. You can create a checkpoint without a battle position, in which case the tanks will not try to find a hull-down position, unless they come under fire. (To prevent any movement when under attack, you can make the tanks "blind" in the mission editor, although this is only useful for a shooting-gallery mission.) If you have other routes starting from this checkpoint, be sure to add embark conditions on these routes so that the unit stops at the checkpoint. You can, instead, set the tactics of the checkpoint to HOLD.  The tanks will of course, try to find a hull-down position when they reach the checkpoint, and they will move when under direct fire to a new firing position, although they don't move very far away.

What are differences between CONDITIONS, EVENTS and TRIGGERS?
Events are simply conditions which are reset only once, at the very start of a mission.  Once an event is set to TRUE, it stays TRUE for the rest of the mission.

A trigger is simply a flag that you can set or reset, by either pressing shift+Number, or by using the menus.  (There's a trigger menu in the map screen, and the triggers are also available in the system menu of the other sceens.)  You use the triggers by including them in conditions.  For example, if you create a route and assign an embark condition to it, you can choose to have the unit embark on that route only when trigger 3 is set.  You do this in the condition window when you assign the condition to the route (by right clicking on the route and selecting Embark if...)

What determines whether you have a victory or a defeat in the scoring formula?
This is based solely on the percentage of the maximum score:
MAJOR VICTORY > 80% of Max Score
VICTORY > 65% of Max Score
MINOR VICTORY > 50% of Max Score
DEFEAT > 30% of Max Score
MAJOR DEFEAT - anything else
